Welcome

Dear Friends,

We hope all of you have had a lovely summer so far and had an opportunity to enjoy the nice weather and have a restful break.

We have had a busy summer for a number of reasons. Our followers and supporters may have noticed that we did fewer public events and stalls this year. This was a deliberate policy to focus our resources on expanding political support for the Wharfedale Greenway ensuring the project is being talked about in the right places and with the right people.

This strategy was given an enormous boost when Anna Dixon MP for Burley in Wharfedale mentioned the Wharfedale Greenway in parliament during an active travel debate. This was done without any lobbying from FoWG so we are very grateful for Anna’s support. This discussion then led to a meeting with Anna, representatives from the government body Active Travel England, local authorities and other interested stakeholders. The meeting was a very good discussion on challenges and potential next steps in helping to make the greenway a reality. We are very grateful for everyone’s input and support. FoWG volunteers have a number of actions to follow up from the Anna Dixon and we are also developing the next element of our political engagement strategy.

Meanwhile we continue to lead and support working groups to develop the route between Otley and Burley and Ilkley and Addingham. We are pleased to report there have been several positive engagements with stakeholders in this respect.

At the public events FoWG did attend this summer we had many great conversations with supporters and pleased that a number of new volunteers have come forward. FoWG look forward to working with these individuals moving forward.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support, whether through volunteering, advocacy, or simply spreading the word, is what makes the Wharfedale Greenway a possibility. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Momentum Builds for Wharfedale Greenway: A Collaborative Push for Progress

Friends of Wharfedale Greenway recently gathered for a pivotal meeting with MP Anna Dixon and a broad coalition of stakeholders, all driven by a shared mission: to advance the Wharfedale Greenway and realise its potential as a transformative route for walkers, cyclists, and wheelers—connecting communities and championing active travel across the region.

Advancing Active Travel: FoWG discuss Upcoming Initiatives

In May, some of our workstream leads came together to discuss progress and to map out the next phase of our plans. From route monitoring strategies, future practical volunteering to early talks of a business plan. We’re looking to build relationships, access, and a shared vision for active travel across the Wharfe Valley.

Exploring Otley: A Step Towards Better Walking and Cycling Connections

A few Friends of Wharfedale Greenway collegaues met up and had a stroll around Otley to survey the town’s existing walking and cycling infrastructure, exploring how better connections could link shops, schools, doctors’ surgeries, and residential areas. Along the way, we considered Otley’s incredible amenities—assets that the entire Wharfedale community deserves easy access to without relying on cars. By identifying safer and more seamless active travel routes, we aim to reduce pressure on parking, cut down environmental impact, and make it easier for everyone to move around our town more sustainably.

Help Shape a Safer, Greener Connection: Have Your Say on Ilkley Road/West Busk Lane Otley Proposal

The journey toward a connected, accessible Wharfedale Greenway is gathering pace—and your voice can help steer it.

Leeds City Council is currently seeking feedback on proposed improvements to Ilkley Road/West Busk Lane in Otley, a key corridor that could become a vital link to the future Greenway route. Whether you’re a walker, cyclist, parent, or advocate for safer streets, this is a golden opportunity to support infrastructure that aligns with our shared vision: a continuous, welcoming route for active travel across Wharfedale.

The proposed changes could enhance safety, reduce traffic speeds, and make Ilkley Road/Wesk Busk Lane a more inviting space for everyone. Most importantly, it has the potential to serve as a natural connector between Otley and the Greenway—bridging communities and encouraging sustainable travel.

Take a few minutes to complete the survey and let the council know how much this matters to you. The survey closes on October 5th 2025.

Every response strengthens the case for thoughtful, inclusive design. Let’s make sure Wharfedale’s future is green, safe, and connected.
