Workstream Meeting May 2025

Advancing Active Travel: FoWG discuss Upcoming Initiatives

Workstream leads meet to discuss latest updates.

Recently, our workstream leads of Friends of Wharfedale Greenway and colleagues gathered to discuss our next steps as we push forward with improving active travel across the Wharfe Valley. With energising conversations and a shared passion for the project, the meeting set fresh objectives for the months ahead.

At the top of the agenda was monitoring current usage of some of the potential routes the Greenway may take. We explored the best ways to count users, especially at key locations like the Otley–Burley link and stretches in Ilkley to Addingham to get a clear picture of how busy these routes really get. This data will be invaluable in helping us strengthen the case for improving infrastructure and ensuring our plans are rooted in real-world usage patterns.

We also began laying the groundwork for creating a Strategic Route Plan, sketching early ideas for connections that could offer safer, greener travel between key communities. From examining terrain to identifying access points and community hotspots, the planning was both practical and imaginative. It’s clear we’re building not just paths, but meaningful links between communities, businesses and infrastructure.

Finally, we discussed a strategic plan to engage with stakeholders, including local/district councils, MP’s, and regional transport bodies. Strengthening these relationships—and speaking with one voice—will be critical to advancing the Wharfedale Greenway vision. We’re exploring templates, meetings, and campaign ideas that will help amplify local voices and turn community enthusiasm into action

If you’re passionate about walking and cycling in Wharfedale, we’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Together, we can build a greener, healthier, and more connected Otley and beyond!
