Join Us in Making the Greenway a Reality!

Have you ever found yourself at a one of our events wondering, “When is the Greenway finally going to happen?” Well, we have some exciting news—we need your help to make it a reality!

The Friends of the Greenway (FOWG) are dedicated to supporting the Greenway Steering Committee in developing this fantastic community project. While the main responsibility lies with the town and parish council representatives along the route, they are increasingly looking to us for vital support in various Greenway development activities.

This is where you come in! By volunteering your time and skills, you can make a significant impact on our progress. Whether you can contribute an hour or a day, every bit helps, and we value every volunteer’s unique contributions.

Together, we pool our resources and talents to achieve our common goal. With more brilliant minds and helping hands, we can accelerate our efforts and bring the Greenway to life. Below are just a few ways you could get involved.

Remember, no contribution is too small. Every volunteer is a vital part of our team, and together, we can make the Greenway happen.

Engineering/Route planning

We need specialist knowledge in areas such as planning active travel routes, highway and engineering specifications, among others. Expanding our pool of volunteers with these skills could help reduce consultancy costs, which are challenging to cover with grant funding. This would enable us to better support planning and feasibility projects.

Project Management

We would welcome additional help to lead or assist with developing projects and initiatives. One area we are keen to develop is low key access and route improvements by practical volunteers. We need a few people to help coordinate how to achieve this objective working alongside other local community groups and key stakeholders. There are many other ideas we would like to develop but equally open to new ideas on how to bring the Wharfedale Greenway a step closer.

Countryside Management and Biodiversity

Biodiversity management along the Greenway route was a significant highlight in our 2023 public survey. We are eager to develop and implement biodiversity enhancement plans along the route. We also seek experts in land management and countryside access to ensure these efforts are successful.

Finances

While FOWG overheads remain relatively low, they’ve been covered so far thanks to the generous support of several corporate sponsors and one-time grants. Expertise in fundraising or financial management would be invaluable in helping us build our core funding, potentially increase our publicity efforts, and advance greenway development projects, including specialized consultancy work.

Website

If you can help us with keeping our website looking fresh and relevant with any build ideas, content suggestions, provide imagery or drone footage.

Event Organising

We look to attend various events across the Wharfe Valley to raise the profile of the Greenway proposal and our group. If you can help man our stall or have suggestions of events we could attend, let us know.

Practical Volunteering

We are working on ways we can help on the proposed route such as clearing damaged trees, drainage issues, general maintenance. This will continue when the Greenway is in place. If you can help, let us know.

Surveys

From time to time we will ask the public to complete surveys to hep us get an understanding of the topic at hand. Check our surveys page for our latest ones.
