First Practical Volunteering Event

Friends of Wharfedale Greenway Improve Otley Walking Route.

the small group of volunteers who helped with the work.

On Sunday, April 27th, Friends of Wharfedale Greenway took a significant step forward in their advocacy efforts by carrying out our first practical improvement work along the potential route.  A small group of  volunteers worked on a small section  of the old railway line  that runs parallel to Bradford Road Otley  to tackle a key drainage issue, making small but important improvements to the path surface and drainage which will  enhance the user experience.

Our efforts focused on clearing  drains alongside the path, enabling water to run off the path more effectively and managing water from natural springs. In addition, we began clearing an old drain which has become clogged with soil on the opposite side, with the aim of diverting water away from the path  and  ultimately improving  the footpath’s condition. These small but important interventions are expected to help the path dry out, making it a more enjoyable and sustainable walking route for all.

This marks the group’s first hands-on work along the proposed Greenway, demonstrating our dedication not only to championing the project but also to actively contributing to interim improvements.

Our Chairman, Colm McCann says

” I’m so pleased that we have got started on practical work making small scale improvements on   sections of the old railway line.  This section in particular has been an issue so for some time with water flowing in from adjacent springs and fields  whilst the drainage system has become clogged due to lack of maintenance.  This work with a small team was a dry run  prior to organising work parties with a bigger number of volunteers and I believe we made quite an impact in a short space of time.  We look forward to making improvements to other sections of the old railway line. “

With our first successful effort completed, we are keen to continue our work, with plans to carry out further interim improvements along the Otley to Burley section in the near future. We are committed to improving footpaths, reinforcing the value of community-driven action in shaping sustainable and accessible infrastructure across the Wharfe Valley.
